This winter, “Game of Thrones” NFTs will be available. Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and HBO have teamed up with NFT platform Nifty to make digital collectible non-fungible tokens based on the hit series. Fans can expect “Game of Thrones” NFTs to come out in late 2022, but there isn’t yet a set date for the launch.
“Game of Thrones: Build Your Realm,” an NFT experience, will let fans build a realm by collecting customizable avatars based on characters from the show as well as different packs with collectibles like weapons, companions, and gear that can be “equipped” to “strengthen” their avatars. WBD said in its announcement that different themed packs will be available throughout the program.
Other NFTs will include special scenes from the show, characters and places from “Game of Thrones,” and more. WBD said that fans will be able to enjoy “thematic activities and on-site engagement” as part of the event.
The company didn’t say anything about prices.
Josh Hackbarth, head of NFT Commercial Development for Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a statement, “Our goal with fans has always been to give them new ways to interact with the stories and characters they love.” “We’re excited to grow the ‘Game of Thrones fan base and franchise with this one-of-a-kind digital collectibles program. It will give fans a deeper connection to the world of Westeros and improve their overall fan experience.”
With the release of NFTs for “Game of Thrones,” which is one of HBO’s most popular shows, WBD is probably hoping to make more money. After having a net loss of $3.4 million last quarter, the company needs money. Also, WBD has about $53 billion in debt. Tomorrow, November 3, the company will announce its Q3 results.
“Every once in a while, a movie or TV show comes along that pushes the limits of its genre so far that it changes the creative landscape for good and becomes a part of our cultural identity as a whole. This generation’s version of that show is “Game of Thrones,” said Jeff Marsilio, CEO, and co-founder of Nifty’s. “Nifty’s is excited to be working with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products to keep pushing the limits of creativity and imagination with a new kind of digital collectible that will let fans of the franchise connect in ways they never have before.”
Also, Daz 3D, a company that makes 3D content, will work with the companies to design, develop, and make the NFT experience.
The media company has worked with Nifty’s before when it released “Looney Tunes” NFTs in June. WBD has also worked with Funko on different NFT drops. And last month, Warner Bros. worked with Eluvio, a blockchain company, to release NFT versions of “The Lord of the Rings” as a web3 movie experience.
